নবান্ন” শব্দের অর্থ “নতুন অন্ন”। নবান্ন উৎসব হল নতুন আমন ধান কাটার পর সেই ধান থেকে প্রস্তুত চালের প্রথম রান্না উপলক্ষে আয়োজিত উৎসব। কৃষিপ্রধান বাংলাদেশে কৃষিসংশ্লিষ্ট অনেক উৎসব রয়েছে। নবান্ন উৎসব এর মধ্যে অন্যতম। বাংলাদেশের অধিকাংশ জনগণই কৃষিজীবী। কঠিন মাটিকে তারা তাদের শ্রম ও শক্তির দ্বারা নমনীয় করে সেখানে প্রাণের জোয়ার সৃষ্টি করে। রােদ-বৃষ্টি মাথায় নিয়ে অসম্ভব খাটুনির পর খেতের সােনালি ফসল যখন তারা ঘরে তুলতে পারে তখন তাদের প্রাণেও আনন্দের বান ডেকে যায়। নবান্ন উৎসব এই আনন্দমুখর প্রাণেরই উৎসব। হেমন্তের শুরু থেকেই সারা বাংলার ঘরে ঘরে ফসল তােলার ধুম পড়ে যায়। তখন এই লােকউৎসব গ্রামবাংলার ঘরে ঘরে পালিত হয়। উৎসবের দিন ভাের না হতেই ছেলেমেয়েরা ঘরের বাইরে এসে ছড়া কেটে দাঁড় কাকদের নিমন্ত্রণ করত। এ দিন ভােরে নতুন ধানের নতুন চাল পেঁকিতে কোটা হয়। বেলা বাড়ার সাথে সাথে বাড়ির প্রবীণরা পারলৌকিক ক্রিয়া সম্পন্ন করেন এবং ছােট ছেলে-মেয়েরা নতুন জামা-কাপড় পরে। এরপর বাড়ির উঠোনে গর্ত করে জ্যান্ত কই মাছ ও দুধ দিয়ে একটি বাঁশ পোঁতা হয়। একে বলে বীর বাঁশ। বীর বাঁশের প্রতিটি কঞ্জিতে নতুন ধানের ছড়া বাঁধা হয়। বীর বাঁশ পোঁতার পর একটি কলার খােলে চাল মাখা কলা ও নারকেলের নাড়ু কাককে খেতে দেওয়া হয়। কাককে কেন্দ্র করে অনুষ্ঠিত এ পর্বটির নাম কাকবলি ‘। এই অনুষ্ঠান শেষ না হওয়া পর্যন্ত কেউ আহার করে না। শস্যের অধিষ্ঠাত্রী দেবী লক্ষ্মীকে পূজা এবং নবান্ন দিয়ে পরে সকলে আহার করে। ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের চারুকলা অনুষদ বেশ ঘটা করেই পালন করে নবান্ন উৎসব। বর্ণিল আয়োজনের মধ্য দিয়ে তিন দিনব্যাপী অনুষ্ঠানে রাজধানীবাসী উপভোগ করে থাকে। নানা রকমের পিঠাপুলির আয়োজন থাকে নবান্ন উৎসবে। আমাদের দেশে নবান্ন উৎসবে অঞ্চলভেদে চলে জারি, সারি, মুর্শিদি, লালন, পালা ও বিচার গান। আর মেলায় পাওয়া যায় নানা স্বাদের খাবার। ছোটদের বাড়তি আনন্দ দিতে মেলায় আসে নাগরদোলা, পুতুল নাচ, সার্কাস, বায়োস্কোপ। ক্রমান্বয়ে এই লােক উৎসবটি সকল সম্পদায়ের মধ্যে জনপ্রিয়তা লাভ করে। বর্তমান সময়ে নবান্ন উৎসবের ব্যাপকতা কিছুটা হ্রাস পেয়েছে। আমাদের উচিত বাংলা ও বাঙালির এই লােক ঐতিহ্যকে টিকিয়ে রাখা।

That’s why we observe this day as our Independence. Every year Independence day is observed with some occasions and respectable way. On this day early in the morning, we hoisted our national flag. All schools and colleges, Madrasha & and another educational institute, government, and non-government all of the official word remain closed on the day. The day is begun with 31 gunshots. During the morning we go to Shahid Minar to offer flowers for the Martyrs. We observe one-minute silence for the forgiveness of their souls. We got this freedom for them. We spent a whole day at one of the events. Independence is more important for all Nations because Man is born to be free. When he loses his freedom, he starts protesting. To get freedom, he can do anything even he can sacrifice his life. And the martyrs have proved this through their self-sacrifice. We never forget them. That is why I sing in the song. Those who brought Bengal’s independence in exchange for a sea of blood, we do not forget you. Never forget you.
