1. A rectangular plot has a concrete path running in the middle of the plot parallel to the breadth of the plot. The rest of the plot is used as a lawn. which has an area of 240 sq. m. If the width of the path is 3m and the length of the plot is greater than its breadth by 2m, what is the area of the rectangular plot?

Solve: Let, length= x m breadth= y m ATQ, x= y+2 and (x-3)y= 240 or, (y+2-3)y= 240 or, y= 16 or -15 but y should be positive, so y=16 and x= 16+2=18 Required area= xy =18 × 16 =288 sq. m

2. A pipe can fill a tank in 0.9 hours and another pipe can empty in 0.7 hours. If tank is completely filled and both pipes are opened simultaneously then 450 liters of water is removed from the tank is 2.5 hours. What is the capacity of the tank?

Solve: In 2.5 hours, total removed= (1/0.7 – 1/0.9) × 2.5 parts (10/7 – 10/9) × 25/10 =50/63 ATQ, 50/63 parts= 450 liters So, 1(whole) part= (450 × 63)/50 = 567 liters

3. A sum of tk 3240 was fixed to complete a work. 54 workers completed the work in 8 days and the sum was divided equally among the workers. If the work was to be completed in 3 days, the how less much money each worker would receive compared to when the work was completed in 8 days?

Solve: In 8 days, each workers earn= Tk. 3280/54 = Tk. 60 To complete in 3 days, more workers will be required. Total workers required to complete in 3 days = (54 × 8)/ 3 =144 Now, each workers earn= Tk. 3240/144 = 22.50 So each worker receive less money =Tk. 60-22.50 =Tk. 37.50

4. Two trains running at the rate of 75 km and 60 km an hour respectively on parallel rails in opposite directions are observed to pass each other in 8 seconds, and when they are running in same direction at the same rates as before a person sitting in the faster train observes that he passes the other in 31 1/2 seconds. find the lengths of the trains.

Solve: Let, length of faster train= x m and slower train= y m For first case, x+y= (75+60)× 5/18 × 8 or, x+y = 300 Now, the faster train has to passes a distance equal to the length of the slower train. i.e. y= (75-60) × 5/18 × 31.5 =131.25 m So, x= 300-131.25 = 168.75 m

5. A, B and C can complete a work separately in 12, 18 and 24 days respectively. They started together but B left after 2 days before completion C left 4 days before the completion of the work. In how many days will the work be completed ?

Solve: Let, total time= x days ATQ, x/12 + (x-2)/18 + (x-4)/24 = 1 x= 7 days (approx.)

1. Let, W=x m L=x+2 m without path, L=x+2-3=x-1 atq, x(x-1)=240 => x^2-x-240=0 => x^2-16x+15x-250=0 => x=16 so, L=16+2=18 m w=16 m Area=18*16=288 sq.m

2.Total days=x days atq, x/12+(x-4)/18+(x-2)/24=1 From calculation=> x=92/13=7(1/13) days.

3. Each gets per day=3240/(54*8)=15/2 tk Total amount gets in 3 days=54*15/2*3 =1215 tk Save =3240-1215=2025tk Each worker less receive=2025/54=37.5 tk.

4. 1st condition: R.spees=75+60=135 km/hr Total length(2train)=135*8*5/18=300m 2nd condition: R.speed=75-60=15 km/hr Let, Length of faster train =x m and slower train=300-x m atq, (300-x)/(15*5/18)=63/2 => x=168.75 so, Lengrh of faster=168.75 m Slower=300-168.75=131.25 m

5. Pipe empty in 1 h=1/.7 – 1/.9=20/63 Now, 2.5 h empty=450 L 1 h empty=450/2.5=180 L atq, 20/63 part=180 1 part=180*60/20=567 L

Solution:

let,  a,b, c are the investments

According to question:

14a:8b:7c = 5:7:8

From this, a/b= 20/49 and b/c =49/64

So, a:b:c =20:49:64 (Ans)

Solution:

In 1 hour, tank filled = 1/20 + 1/30

The leakage will drain 1/3 of the tank ( at what rate, that is not given)
So the two pipes will fill the tank and also fill 1/3 more so that the leakage is overcome.
To fill the whole tank it requires = 12 hours
For extra 1/3 it requires = 1/3 ×12 hrs
= 4 hours
Total time = 12+4

=16 hours (Ans)

7. A sum of money becomes 8 times in 3 years at compound interest. How many years it will become 16 times?

Solution:

let P= Principal
r = rate of interest
According to question:

P(1+r)^3 =8p
r=1 or 100%
And, P ( 1+r )^n = 16P

n= 4 years (Ans)

Here,
Remaining days= 200-100
=100 days
Remaining work = 15-2.5
=12. 5 km
Now,
In 100 days 2.5 km done by 45 men
In 1 day 1 km done by 45 ×100 / 2.5
In 200 days 12.5 km done by (45 ×12.5 ×100) / (2.5 × 200)
= 112.5≈113
Extra men required = 113-45

=68 (Ans)

A can contains a mixture of two liquids A and B is the ratio 7 : 5. When 9 litres of mixture are drawn off and the can is filled with B, the ratio of A and B becomes 7 : 9. How many litres of liquid A was contained by the can initially?

Solution:

Let A= 7x liter
B= 5x liter
According to question:
(7x – 9× 7/12) / (5x- 9× 5/12 + 9) = 7/9

x = 3
So, amount of A = 3×7

= 21 liter (Ans)
